Welcome to our homepage

Welcome to our updated site. Firstly an explanation of the new features contained within this site. We have;

  • A new forum where you can post messages or enquiries. You may wish to browse our messages but in order to post a message or reply you will need to register (this is a relatively simple and painless process).
  • A new calendar of events. We will post upcoming events here as they come to hand. Should you wish to post a pānui of an upcoming event please contact the site administrator
  • We have a page where you can order our products and services. We don't have enough products to warrant having an online catalog and ordering system but as our product list grows, we will put one up to accomodate the demand

About our Roopu

We are a small volunteer group whose vision is to restore, preserve and utilize the coastal resources of Pingao and Toheroa. We are working to re-establish these along our local shorelines.

Preserving our taonga for future generations is of paramount concern to our group.
Our vision is to preserve, reestablish and restore endangered taonga back on to the coastal environment.

We focus on replenishing both species of Toheroa and Pingao alongside each other in acknowledgement of our relationship between each other.

We work mainly with the schoolchildren in the Far North starting from the collection of the seeds in December through to the planting out on the dunes.

We are unique in that we utilise and have access to ancestral knowledge, which supports the existence of an interdependent relationship between some of the flora and fauna species that form part of our coastal environment.

Now we are one of the only groups working to establish our connection with a long-term observation period which has already been initiated, and a working restoration programme that involves both species.

Having said that, it must also be accepted, that much knowledge has also been lost and guess work forms part of our methodology.
Knowledge is power and we work as best as we can, learning from hands on experience, trial and error, patience and perseverance in an area where research methods are only just beginning to take shape.

" We need to get more people involved and we can only do that if we can bring to the table informed knowledge and the confidence of a national body of peer groups whose exchange of data and research will support the continued efforts of the group"

About our kōwhaiwhai 'Hononga'

Design by Theresa Reihana

'Hononga' represents the coming together of separate entities or  environments and the life, essence, relationship or bond that is created  from that union.  Where two opposing forces come together there will always be conflict  however positive reactions occur from this. Peace can only come from  conflict.
Where two separate entities join or unite, they create a singular unit.  Man and woman create life, earth and sea create the whole ecosystem on the  shoreline, two opposing groups can unite to form a more positive  relationship. Tomo is an  example of this where a two hapu literally become  one because of the offspring of the union between man and woman.
Also depicted in this pattern is the division of Ranginui and Papatuanuku  of  which all life derived.
